Microdermabrasion: The Exfoliating Powerhouse for Your Skin
A lot of people hear what microdermabrasion means and think it’s a painful procedure. While it may sound scary at first, the results are transformative when performed by a licensed aesthetician. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliation procedure that gently exfoliates and smooths out your skin.
Here at Vina Laser Med Spa, our microderm process utilizes diamond tips that are used as a vacuum when glided across the skin to remove dry, damaged cell layers. This procedure helps remove dead skin cells, smooths texture, and allows products to work deep into your skin. It jumpstarts your skins natural exfoliation process, initiating a healing process with protein synthesis, increased circulation, and cell renewal.
What Should I Expect?
At the start of your microdermabrasion session, your aesthetician will assess the condition of your skin and provide you with a customized treatment plan to achieve the results you are looking for. During the session, your skin will be appropriately cleansed and prepped. The microdermabrasion process includes your aesthetician using a wand covered with small diamond chips that gently exfoliate the top layer of your skin, removing dead skin cells and revealing a smoother, brighter complexion.
Afterwards, your skin will be replenished and hydrated. Microdermabrasion increases the efficacy of your skincare products by opening up your pores and boosting absorption. For the best results, we recommend getting our transforming IPL Laser Photofacial after you have received a microdermabrasion treatment.
Does Microdermabrasion Hurt?
No, but it is a professional form of exfoliation so you may feel a bit flushed afterwards. Since it removes the outermost layer of your skin and gives your circulation a boost, you’ll immediately notice a rosy glow.
In terms of sensation, it is typically compared to a cat licking your skin. Not painful, but not necessarily comfortable either!

Microdermabrasion Pre-Treatment Care
When preparing for your upcoming microdermabrasion appointment, it is important that you do not use any retinols, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, or any other exfoliating products one week prior to your appointment. These products are chemical exfoliators, which could result in over exfoliation and increased sensitivity when combined with microdermabrasion. You also want to avoid sun exposure prior to your treatment because sunburnt skin cannot be treated. Lastly, avoid getting any aesthetic injectable services for 2 weeks prior to your appointment. You may arrive to your appointment with some light makeup on, but please refrain from using heavy or waterproof eye makeup / mascara that can be hard to remove.
Microdermabrasion Post Treatment Care
Initial dryness, flaking, or a feeling of mild sunburn are normal reactions after a microderm procedure and there is no need to be worried as they are sign that your skin is repairing itself. Please remember that everyone’s skin can react differently to the microdermabrasion treatment. Regular moisture applications are VITAL to replenish hydration and prevent skin from becoming dry and peeling. Use non-active products to help nurture the skin (Feel free to ask your aesthetician for recommendations!). Do not directly expose the treated skin to the sun for at least 48 hours after your session and use SPF 30 or higher every day. We recommend using a SPF with zinc or titanium dioxide, so it does not irritate the skin. Avoid touching your face or neck with unwashed hands and avoid excessive exercise that causes sweating for 48 hours after your treatment. More post treatment care is as follows:
-
- For 12 Hours After: No heavy makeup
- For 24 Hours After: No swimming, facial waxing, or tweezing
- For 48 Hours After: No saunas, sun beds or sun exposure
- For 72 Hours After: Don’t use any alpha hydroxy acid products (those containing lactic or glycolic acid), salicylic acid products, retinoids, or other topical acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide.
- For 7 Days After: No waxing, tweezing, scrubs or exfoliants, laser treatments of any kind, botox, fillers, or chemical peels of any kind
